Its name comes from the Greek goddess Athena and it is a place that will definitely leave a strong impression if you're visiting for the first time.

For ages, Athens has been recognised as a major tourist destination for its historical antiquities, stunning architecture, exquisite food, and wonderful Mediterranean climate. This is the place where arts, science, and philosophy originated in western civilizations. Also home to some of the most famous philosophers such as Plato, Socrates, Pericles, Euripides, and Sophocles.

The city in numbers:

Some of their main features:

Sand and Sun

The capital is surely known for its breathtaking beaches with crystal clear water and sand-fringed shorelines. It features the longest coastline of any European capital and the water is considered one of the cleanest and highest in quality. But this is not the best part, the best part is that most of the finest beaches are only a short drive or even a tram ride away. So don't worry about running out of time or having a busy schedule.

There are beaches and swimming spots for every taste, from organized, luxury options, to empty stretches of sand just for you. You will also find bars, restaurants, and even activities suitable for solo travelers, couples, friends, or families. Most of them are free to enter and offer amenities such as toilets, changing rooms, and sun-beds. Just make sure to bring yourself and a towel.

Tip: If you do have a whole day to spare, you can find a boat and go to an island for the whole day. Isn't that stunning?

Greek cuisine

Eating in Athens has to be one of the most exquisite adventures, a place where you can find food almost everywhere, from restaurants to street vendors.

The singularity of Greek cuisine relies on the combination of ingredients for both carnivores and vegetarians. Be advised that the spicing is unusual and lamb, olive oil, and fish are common ingredients

The capital city follows the tradition of Symposiums, a banquet right after the meal that was accompanied by music, dancing, recitals, or conversations. The custom has been preserved throughout time and locals most commonly share meals or appetizers with friends as it is a rooted social habit. Eating out is a wholesome experience where you will always find good company and have a good time.

Try a gastronomic tradition of over 4,000 years.

Wine

The city is bordered by many little ancient vineyards which may be also seen from the airplane before landing. Many of these are within a 30-minute drive from the center of Athens, so don't worry about running out of options.

Their wine culture comes a long way back as Greek mythology is extremely rich, this tradition particularly started with Dionysos, the god of wine. It is said that this god taught them how to nurture the vines and make wine, as well as how to maintain and enjoy it.

Currently, Greece has a great diversity of wines available from every part of the nation. When tasting Greek wine, keep in mind that it is the result of an extraordinary harvest, manufactured from grape different varieties. Wine tasting in Athens is quite an experience and there are several tours available for you to have a good time.

The beauty in open spaces:

Openness is pretty much a well-known concept in the capital. This is part of their culture, lifestyle, and character as the city offers a distinctive feeling of freedom all around.

You will find multiple green areas such as gardens and parks, some of them visible in the most famous spots or others slightly hidden but still wonderful. Its rich morphology makes the city full of panoramic views, so take a romantic walk, relax with your children and find multiple recreational environments or just tour around on your own. This is your chance to swim, go to a waterfront coffee, perform any water sport or dine by the sea.

The best part is that you don't need to get on a ferry to escape the bustle of the Greek capital, everything you need is a walk or bus away. So, whatever it is you want to do, this city is the perfect place for you.

Tip: One of the most beautiful elements in the city is its mythical summer cinemas. Before you start wondering what is so special about a regular cinema, this one, in particular, is held on the outside under the stars.  Athenian summer cinemas will make unforgettable memories for you, surrounded by the aroma of potted plants and water fountains.

Paragliding:

Athens is just one of those places with the perfect dry weather and environment for gliding, hang gliding, and paragliding.

This is a recreational and competitive sport where you can either fly paragliders: lightweight, foot-launched, or a glider aircraft. Even though there are no engines for this activity, a paraglider can last really long in the sky and cover hundreds of kilometers.

It might sound scary, but don't worry as no experience is required for this. There will always be a certified pilot to join you or your friends on this amazing ride. Definitely, one of those experiences full of adrenaline.

It is recommended to wear hiking boots, pants, and a jacket for your flight. Other than that, all the equipment needed will be provided with a GoPro camera to record your journey.

The flight time and duration depend on two basic things: the weather conditions and of course, your mood.

DID YOU KNOW?

 Fact #1:   First known democracy

Athens is the place where democracy was first established in the world. The actual term comes from two Greek words that mean people (Demo) and rule (Kratos). But before this, the capital city experienced nearly every other form of government from monarchy to democracy, socialism to capitalism, and even communism.

Let's bear in mind that back then their idea of democracy was somehow different as adult citizens were obligated to take an active role in the government. Each year, 500 names were chosen randomly and every single member of the list was required to fulfill their role towards the city, if not they were fined and marked with red paint. Another significant difference was that their definition of citizens did not actually include all citizens, only free men were able to vote as women, children, and slaves were not taken into consideration.

Did you know this?

Fact #2: UNESCO world Heritage

Most people confuse the Parthenon and the Acropolis as they think they're both the same thing. In reality, the Acropolis is the most distinctive monumental complex that contains the remains of several ancient buildings created by the finest architects and sculptors. It is located on a rocky outcrop above the city where democracy, philosophy, theater, and freedom of expression and speech originated.

Even though one of the most famous buildings in the Acropolis is the Parthenon, the overall combination of all the monuments is what constitutes a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For this reason, it is one of Athen's main attractions and a highly recommended place to visit for tourists.

Fact #3: Most theatrical stages

Athens is the city with the most theatrical stages worldwide. As a matter of fact, it is safe to say that we can thank the Greeks for theater as we now know it. Even the word comes from the greek word theatron which translates to "a place of seeing". With 148 theatrical stages, the city started this concept with the tradition of celebration for gods and goddesses.

The thrill of these theatrical shows became a major feature of Dionysia. A whole five days festival for the staging of tragedies, comedies, and satyrs. The event quickly grew to be one of the greatest and most significant in Athens, and the news extended across the rest of the country rapidly making it a proper annual tradition.
